Chapter Six

Smoke One for Freaky

If one thing fueled the fire in the search for Freaky’s killer, it was his funeral. It was a mixture of the speeches and tears. In Farrah’s heart, it was the overall void and realization that no matter how bad she wanted him back, he couldn’t come back. The vibe in the streets was off. For everybody, they found it hard to mourn a man who contributed so much and who meant so much to so many people. Not only was he a father, to men, he was a brother; he was a boyfriend and ultimately, a best friend. To others, he was a savior in is community and an inspiration giving to those who needed it the most when not even their own families would help them. Teaching them and showing that the life was much bigger than what was in the hood. Freaky receiving his 4-year scholarship gave so many of his guys hope. They hoped to one day be just like him—go away from the hood and then put it back on the map. His inner circle consisted of men who were just like him. Although on the same team, his homies all had different majors ranging from business to pre-med to physical therapy, and they all were a positive influence on him and his life.

Bright and early the next day after the funeral, Farrah called off work. Not only was her heart heavy, her head was aching, and she had to get shit together on her own. In her dreams, she dreamt of detective boards covering her walls with pictures of suspects and big spots where scribbles of call-ins sat, leading Farrah closer to catching her brother’s killer. When she woke up, not knowing where to start again, she decided first to make a Facebook page. Stealing a mixed female’s pictures off Google, she used her picture to play a 21-year old, single girl named Lovely BaddestBitchAlive Torres. She added any and everybody from all different hoods in Chicago even people from her very own. While she waited on them to accept her friend request, she started to get ready to go out. She figured who better to know anything if not the motherfuckers who were was really in the streets.

Her plan of the day was simple—to play Inspector Gadget for the days. With a pen in one hand and her phone in the other, she scrolled through her social networks periodically, checking different guys’ statuses ranging back from the day of Freaky’s murder to that very same day. They didn’t have to say his name, but if their post was in anyway aggressive, she jotted them down as a suspect. Social media was her early morning coffee. After all, on those social sites, people never hesitated to logon and share their whole lives with complete strangers even their lies. All niggas from all hoods ran they mouth to no end, but little did Freaky’s killer know that was how they were about to be figured out.
